Pastoral Statement

MISSION: Making, maturing and mobilising disciples of Jesus Christ

VISION: By 2013 we will be a growing and multiplying church with a local and global concern and a clearer focus on making, maturing and mobilising disciples, especially through our ministries with children and families, youth and young adults and mature adults.

This statement outlines a number of changes approved by me as Senior Minister, the Co-ordinating Ministers and the Church Board that are being introduced across our church in the second half of 2012, or in 2013. These changes are being driven by our desire to be a healthy and growing church that is faithful to God’s vision for us. Since our Mission and Vision were accepted in late 2010, the two most obvious outcomes have been the establishment of the new 10am Congregation at St Silas, led by Peter Carolane and the Training and Discipleship Centre led by Tracy Lauersen.

Many other aspects of the Vision document have been or are being attended to.Every church from time to time has to give consideration to the shape of its congregational life, and whether it is the best way for us to meet together. The easiest thing to do is to keep doing things as they are. In looking at our current mix of congregations, we want to ensure that at all of our gatherings we:

Celebrate God’s goodness in word and song

Are shaped by God’s word as it is read and taught

Share in the gospel sacraments of Baptism and Lord’s Supper

Fellowship together after church, but more especially, in small groups during the week

Raise up, nurture and equip volunteer leadership

Have potential to grow

Equip people of all ages for leadership, service and witness within the church and wherever we live, work, study and play

The purpose of these proposed changes are to:

Ensure all congregations are healthy and have a basis for growth

Grow new missional congregations that connect with new people in new ways in new places

Ensure we are not overstretched in sustaining several smaller congregations

Ensure we make the best use of our staff resources, but actively encourage volunteer leadership and participation

Have healthy and strong ministries to children and families, youth and young adults, but also mature adults

Connect cross culturally as our area becomes more diverse

From mid 2012 onwards, we are proposing the following changes:

Establishing a core team under the leadership of Peter Carolane to work towards a new congregation plant in the inner North East in 2013. Peter will be farewelled from his leadership of the 7pm Congregation on Sunday 22nd July.

Focus our children’s and families ministry on Sundays at 9am (St Hilary’s), 10am (St Silas) and Messy Church (once a month). As a consequence of this, at the end of Term 2 we will be ending the focus on children and families in the 11am service and the related Sunday Club. We thank each person who has worked to enable this ministry in the past six years.

The Rev Tim Johnson will continue to lead the 9am and 11am Congregations at St Hilary’s. Rev Peter Corney will assist him at the 11am Congregation in the second half of 2012. In 2013 we will engage a part time Minister to develop and strengthen our pastoral care of our more mature members, as well as mobilise people in mission.

This Minister will also lead the St Silas 9am Sunday and 10.30am Wednesday Congregations.

Rev Tracy Lauersen will lead the 6pm Congregation in a process of prayerful discernment about the future of that congregation. More information will be circulated via small groups this week.

The 7pm Congregation will move back to St Hilary’s on Sunday 29th July. The 7pm Congregation has been in a pack up and pack down situation for 10 years. This move will enable us to make better use of our facilities and also allow for a range of other activities to happen pre and post the service. It will also generate significant savings both financially and in terms of staff/volunteer time and effort. This congregation is targeted at youth and young adults, but has a good mix of ages who attend regularly.

In order to accommodate this change, the church will re-orient back to the front facing set up. This will enable us to seat the same number of people as at present, but with all people sitting in the body of the church.

I know this is a lot to take on board, but we are hopeful that these changes will set us up for the future, whereby our Mission vision can be fulfilled and we can release resources to connect with new people in new ways. I assure you that we will follow through pastorally with those more specifically impacted by these changes. Please feel free to talk to me or any of those people listed below. KEY TASKS:
• To oversee the 7pm Congregation and the Youth and Young Adult Ministries
• To establish a vision for the overall ministry in alignment with the Church’s Mission of Making, Maturing and Mobilising Disciples of Jesus Christ
• To work with staff and lay volunteers to implement this vision

SUB TASKS:

1. Establish a new vision and strategic plan for Youth and Young Adults Ministry and Mission to be implemented over the next three to five years

2. Lead the 7pm Congregation

- Ensure the services are properly planned and well led
- Preach regularly and establish the preaching program in consultation with the Senior Minister
- Work with the Youth staff and key volunteers to grow the congregation
- To plant a new Youth Congregation in 2014

3. Ensure the ongoing development of Youth programs for Junior High and Senior High in the light of being a multi-site church

4. Oversee the Youth and Young Adult staff team
- High school
- Young Adults
- Outreach

5. To support the current annual Camp / Conferences and encourage development of camping ministry

6. To run regular Youth staff meetings and supervise staff

7. Liaise with CAFM to ensure good cross over links for junior high youth

8. Liaise with Director of Training and Discipleship Centre in relation to training programs and conferences

9. Develop Youth and Young Adult training opportunities to be offered to the wider church beyond St Hilary’s

10. Oversee pastoral care of Youth and Young adults of the 7pm Congregation

11. Continue to develop links with Mustard leadership and Chaplains in terms of schools outreach.

12. To work as part of the Co-ordinating Staff Team and to make a wider contribution to the life of the church.
